Your Snow Journey

What is the snow journey?

What do you do?

What do I do?

Our trips will be in the beautiful Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW). The portion of the wilderness area we will journey through is the eastern half, around the Gunflint Trail, north of Grand Marais, Minnesota. Your job is to meet me in Grand Marais with proper clothing and other personal gear and I will take it from there. My job is to provide you with a great winter wilderness adventure.

The following is a list of what I provide.

  • Wood heated canvas tent
  • Sleeping bags and sleeping pads
  • Snowshoes
  • Food (I can plan all the meals, or we can build a menu together.)
  • First night indoor lodging
  • First aid supplies, I am Wilderness First Aid (WFA) certified
  • Saws, hatchets, cook kit, gas stove, and other camp gear
  • My guiding service and love of the shared adventure

This next list is what you take care of.

  • Transportation to Grand Marais, Minnesota.
  • Personal gear, such clothing, skis, binoculars, cameras, extra food, or anything else important and/or fun for you.  In the final planning of our trip, I will give you a detailed list of personal gear.

These wilderness snow journeys are human powered, no sled dogs. You will be pulling an eight foot sled, helping around camp with firewood, water, and tent erection. These jobs do not take long with a team effort. This requires a basic level of fitness for the short trips and a higher level for the longer trips. I am fit, but no longer a young man so I pace myself and the crew. These journeys are not death marches; we take our time and enjoy the surroundings.

The BWCAW is a wilderness area, no motors are allowed, and cell phones will not work, we are totally cut off unless you bring in a satellite phone. All we will hear will be Timber Wolves, Owls, lake ice groaning, and wind; you will not hear cell phones, cars, snowmobiles, or small aircraft. All you will see will be Moose, Red Fox, Pine Martin, Lake Trout, snow, canyons, and beautiful frozen lakes.

The pricing page will give you more information about the length of trips, I have trip routes planned, but will custom fit anything depending on what you want. Some of you may be heavily into skiing or fishing and have an idea of a specific place you would like to go.

A typical trip will start with the rendezvous in Grand Marais. From there we will head up the Gunflint Trail to Tuscarora Lodge where we will spend our first night and shake down gear. The following morning we depart for the winter wilderness. We will finish or journey back at the lodge.
